I’m an adjunct English teacher on Winter Break. I had intentions to do things with my time off. There were a list of books I wanted to read and things I wanted to write, but then I came down with illness. I’ve been ill on and off for much of this year. I’ve lost much sleep and I’ve had many dreams when I finally get to sleep. There were many things I wanted to do this Winter Break. I had to change my expectations for this time, but now, I feel stronger every day. I’ve been burning pink and green candles and drinking Jasmine and Pistachio tea. I’ve been counting all the things that I have now, that I didn’t have five years ago. Last night, I read a book of poetry called Sharks in the Rivers by Ada Limón. There were sounds and images of water and family and politics. I’m going to continue to work on my novella and write micro stories about beasts that are drawn in a multitude of colors on my new pack of cards.
